Gate Keeper comes out of Watts Tech, a New Zealand hardware team that got tired of watching good time disappear on the drive out to a gate.
It started with a simple, annoying truth: a gate takes two minutes to work, but getting to it can take twenty. Multiply that across a season and a property, and you’ve lost days to something a bit of clever hardware should handle.
So Watts Tech built the thing they wanted themselves: a unit that clamps onto an ordinary farm gate and puts it on a phone. Open it from the ute. Set it to swing at first light. Have it close behind the mob and sing out if it’s ever left open. No new gate, no power run, no reliable signal required.
That first working setup went to Fieldays, into the Innovation Hub on stall IN28, and it struck a nerve with the farmers who stopped by. Enough to land it as a Fieldays Innovation Awards finalist. It’s the same idea we’re building the first production batch around now.
